A GA4 channel for AI assistants
GA4 lumps AI-assistant visits into Referral, so ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude traffic is hard to see. A custom channel group fixes it in about five minutes and applies to your past data too. The steps are below; the template file has them plus a developer version.
Setup
Five minutes in the GA4 interface
- In GA4, open Admin, then Data display, then Channel groups.
- Copy the Default channel group (or create a new channel group) and name it "Channels with AI assistants".
- Add a new channel called "AI assistants".
- Set its condition to: Source matches regex, and paste the pattern below.
- Drag "AI assistants" above "Referral" so AI traffic is classified first, then save.
- In reports, switch the primary dimension to your new channel group. It applies to past data too.
Source matches regex:
.*(chatgpt\.com|chat\.openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|claude\.ai|copilot\.microsoft\.com|meta\.ai|you\.com|poe\.com).* AI referrals are still small, about 1% of site traffic across large sites, but they are growing about 1% a month and convert well. You can't manage what you can't see.

Then estimate what analytics is missing
Even with the channel, analytics undercounts AI. Compare it with what your customers say.
